Woodworkers of Central New York

September 2020 Show & Tells

During September online meetings, members displayed a variety of projects in the Show & Tell portion of the meetings.  Below are most of the pieces shown during the meetings!

Mike Vecellio is a very generous man.  A retired teacher, he spends many hours creating projects that he gifts to those he believes needs them.  A few years ago, he began making pens - using a drill press as his lathe.  He joined the club, learned more about traditional lathes, and acquired one.  Since then he's made many pens and tops - all to gift.  These planes are also made to gift.  Using scrap wood, he's created this small fleet to give to kids that may need one.  Thanks MIke for your generosity.

Mike also showed how he cut and assembled pieces of Spectraply to obtain a better blank as shown in the left pen rather than the right pen.  He also showed how scrap cutting board pieces could be assembled to create beautiful handles for bottle openers and ice cream scoops.

Elaine Negrotto received this two-side decoration last year as a gift.  It's made of old wood from an outhouse.  She is replicating herself.  This set she nicknamed Barb & Charlie.  Not sure which is which!

Jim Farrell recently was honored to become grandfather to his first granddaughter.  He began to spoil her by turning rattles.  Initially he used BB's inside the rattle but it wasn't noisey enough.  Subsequently, he's using small nuts for the rattle.

Raymond Smith showed his latest bowl which he undercut to make thinner.  He's been turning for under a year and this is the thinnest he's made a bowl.  Ray also purchased some one dollar pen blanks at Lakeshore Hardwoods and showed those he completed.

Rick Kiehl - another new turner - completed a cherry bowl with a walnut and maple top.   He also completed two lidded boxes of apple, one with a teak oil finish and one with a polyurethane and wax finish.

John Petzke recently completed this set of red oak bunk beds for his granddaughter.  He is still working on the ladder.  He used a golden oak stain before applying several coats of polyurethane to the beds.  Needless to say, these are not yet setup in her bedroom but rather still in the shop.

Susan Allen showed a variety of projects at the September Scrolling SIG meeting.  All of her projects were already delivered to those who asked her to create them.  Above is a dog feeding unit she built.  There are no screws in the unit, rather it is assembled with dowels.
Susan also created the assortment of projects below.

Robert Ward showed a variety of projects he completed recently.  All are made from 1/2 inch woods.  The wedding plaque was made of blue pine and the pattern was purchased as a custom one from Sheila Landry Designs.  The dreamcatcher and heart in heart are both of walnut.  The Celtic cross and bear paw are both maple.  The welcome home plaque is also pine with a Ipswich pine stain.

Barbara Raymond-LaPrease showed a variety of projects she's working on.  She left the stacked cherry and walnut lidded box apart to show how it is made.  The same with the lacewood bowl.  The base of the bowl will be burned and colorized.  The cottonwood wolf plaque will get a backer and some color.  The small pieces were cut as demo pieces for the marbling demo.
