Woodworkers of Central New York

February 2021 Show & Tells

We had three gatherings in February - one on February 3rd, one on February 9th, and one on February 17th.  Below are photos and descriptions of  the projects discussed during the Show & Tell portion of the meeting, if we received the photos.

Bruce Meissner made this dresser after his wife was "tired of his old darker one".  He used mostly ash but also some poplar for the drawers.  It is about 55" tall by 34" wide by 18" deep.  It took Bruce 6 months to construct and finish it.  For the sides he hand cut the dovetails as the boards would not easily fit in his jog.  He used the jig to make the drawer dovetail joints.  The doors are Baltic birch plywood with quilted ash veneer.  The hardware is all made by Brusso and it is finished with Waterlox.  Next up, a bed to match (per his wife).

Scott Chester recently completed this new oak mantle to top off the fireplace.  He spent many hours designing it.  He and his wife have a couple Schwibbogen that normally adorn the mantle so he incorporated a plug   The finish is a cognac Varathane stain then several coats of polyurethane.  Scott thanks Terry Dote for his assistance with this project.

Bill Shea started working on this New Hampshire desk 4 years ago.  He vows to complete it.  Made of walnut and eastern white pine, he is hand cutting all dovetail joints and continues to work on building the drawers as well as carving in details.  Next he will build the frame and then finish likely with shellac.

Bill also recently completed a drawer unit to house his table saw blades in the cabinet under his table saw.

Steve Grossman built this walnut with maple inlay Dimple Box using plans in the October/November 2020 issue of Woodcraft magazine.  For the finish, he started with boiled linseed oil.  After 5 days of drying, he added amber wax and then buffed it.  The dimpling is done with either a power carver like a Dremel with the appropriate bit.

Dave Stowe's grandson has a collection of professional hockey player pucks.  His grandfather used the pucks as an accent in this hickory lamp.  Using hickory from his yard, he added a teak oil finish before adding lamp parts he purchased from Amazon.

Mike Vecellio recently completed this segmented bowl, playing with the location of the wood in the rings to create a different look.
Mike also talked about how he is using Sierra pen kits with "extensions" to create longer pens by adding a 1/4" dowel.

Rod Castle was featured in a local magazine which resulted in a Cazenovia man commissioning this 21.5 inch cherry peppermill.  The finish is Tung oil.

Steve Sabella is finding time in his busy schedule to create a few bandsaw boxes.  These are his "test" pieces.  The first two are from a walnut log with great bark. The upside down one was a design change when he made a mistake cutting the drawer.  The last box is more of a "lidded" one from a piece of FOGwood.  He used about a 1 degree angle to bevel cut the inner space, then trimmed off excess after dropping it into the space.  He flocked the inside with DonJer's flocking material.

Jerry Holbrook sent along this photo of the bandsaw box he created in 2016 as an entry for the annual arts and crafts competition during the New York State Fair.  Made of mahogany, each small drawer is also flocked.

Michael Crescenti recently completed this knife.  We are waiting on details and will add when we have them.

Charlie LaPrease was asked to replicate a baluster for one of Don Vanderveer's clients.  Charlie did the turning and Don will cut the dovetail on the end.  Charlie also turned three bowls and a ball.  Two of the bowls are big leaf maple from Oregon and the third is butternut.  The ball is maple.
Barbara Raymond-LaPrease recently completed a variety of projects.
The 5" tall cherry vase is a pattern from Steve Good.  It is missing a finish.
The hedgehog is from the Winter 2020 issue of Scrollsaw Woodworking & Crafts.  It is supposed to "ramp walk" and is one of many patterns available from Wood Creation Plans.   Hopefully, she can adjust so it will ramp walk.

The spoiled dog plaque is another Steve Good pattern with raised photos of Credence and Bama.  It's a gift for the dogs' parents.
The decorative bowls are rosewood and walnut.
The heart baskets are another Steve Good pattern.  The basket walls of the smaller basket are cut from the scrap of the larger basket.  Another box will use the inside of the small basket.
