Mike Vecellio was recently introduced to zebrawood, a West African wood whose heartwood is a light brown or dark cream color with black streaks vaguely resembling a zebra's stripes. Known to have a coarse texture that can dull planer blades and any other tools, tearout is also very common. He recently completed this bowl which he said is "60 inches across. Oops, I mean 6.0 inches across." The finish is Odie's Oil. He made the bowl to hold M&M's!!
A client returned a Gatsby pen to Mike because the mechanism wasn't working. Mike used another kit's mechanism and was left with the outer parts. He created a pen using the innards of an old Paper Mate pen plus a purple dyed birch barrel. |
Brad Rees is our newest member. He recently purchased a Laguna lathe and is slowly learning to turn. After some practice (shown in the right photo), Brad created an antique peppermill from a piece of wood like that shown in the photo. Brad knows a little about lathes as he uses a specialized version to repair pool cues as the owner of Brick House BIlliards in North Syracuse.
