Special Interest Groups
aka Committees of the Corporation

The Woodworkers of Central New York is composed of members - both men and women of a wide variety of backgrounds -  with a wide variety of woodworking interests and across a variety of woodworking genres.  We have four Special Interest Groups [aka Committees of the Corporation] that allow members to focus on any of the three specific genres - carving, scrolling, or turning - or to broaden their interests at the woodworking group's meeting which encompasses those three and many other genres in its programs and events.  Each group holds meetings, workshops, and even special events that are targeted toward member's unique needs.  Members pay a low, single fee to join and are then able to attend meetings of each group for no additional fee.  Certainly, if there are additional fees for workshops or special events, they must pay those fees.
NOTE:  The legal term under NYS Not-For-Profit Law is Committees of the Corporation but they are really Special Interest Groups.

Carvers

Picture
The Carvers are focused on the woodworking genre of carving wood, along with its tools, techniques, and demonstrations.  Meetings are held on the 3rd Thursday of the month.  Each meeting includes an informal gathering and open carving time, a casual Show & Tell, and a Monthly Carve-A-Long.
The Monthly Carve-A-Long is intended to be an easy, one night project that allows attendees to have a successful experience carving and leave with a completed project.
The Show & Tell session is very informal and all attendees are encouraged to bring projects that are either completed or in progress to share with others.
The Carvers have a tool chest with a variety of carving equipment that can be used during meetings and loaned until members obtain their own equipment.
Check out photos of projects displayed at meetings in our Gallery pages!
More information here.

Scrollers

Picture
The Scrollers are a less formal group that meets only five times a year to discuss techniques specific to the scrolling community.  Special topics may be presented at the meetings.  Sometimes, the attendees are encouraged to try the technique presented with a display of their results at the next meeting.  The group  meets in February, April, June, September, and November.   Photos of projects shown at meetings can be seen in our Gallery pages! The Scrollers have a new Pegas scroll saw for demonstrations and workshops.
More information here.

Woodturners

Picture
As the name says, the Woodturners hold sessions whose subject matter is focused on the skills, tools, techniques, and demonstrations associated with turning wood.  The group meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.  Each meeting includes a Monthly Demonstration, a Show & Tell session, and a Monthly Challenge.
The Monthly Demonstrations vary but are focused on topics of interest to the members.  The current schedule for demonstrations are listed here.
The Monthly Challenge is a way for all club members to hone their turning skills using information and techniques learned during each monthly meeting’s demonstration.  Members are encouraged to bring to the next meeting an original piece they created after the meeting that fits the basic requirements of the Monthly Challenge and within the constraints announced by the Committee Chairperson.   Our gallery includes photos.
Like most craft organizations, a big part of each meeting is a Show & Tell session.  The creativity of the membership really shows during these sessions as members talk about their projects.  Again, the gallery includes photos of items displayed at each meeting.
The club owns eight lathes - 7 Rikon model 70-220VSR, 1 Rikon 70-100, and 1 Jet JWL-1014I - that it houses at a member's  home which allows for hands-on workshops on the topics covered in their monthly meeting as well as workshops on the basics of turning, special turning topics, and workshops with national demonstrators.  Additionally, it maintains sets of tools and accessories that members can use during workshops or borrow for review.
The Woodworkers of Central New York are a Chapter of the American Association of Woodturners.  More information about the AAW, membership, and their annual Symposium can be found here.   More information about the woodturners can be found here.

Woodworkers

The Woodworkers is a cross-genre group, in that it doesn't matter what you create, you are welcome to bring it to meetings.  Demonstrations range from very specialized areas to cross-disciplinary topics.  Over the years, the group has looked at a variety of finishing techniques, the vast array of joinery techniques, bending wood using a variety of techniques, constructing workbenches, dust collection issues and methodology, the plight of the American Chestnut, jigs for easier woodworking, timber framing, and many other topics.
Each meeting includes a Show & Tell session where members are encouraged to showcase their latest projects.  Photos from these sessions can be found in our Gallery pages.  After a break, the evening presentation starts.
More information and their schedule can be found here.
