This day-long class focused on enhanced the carver's understanding and skill at shadow relief carving. Geared toward the advanced beginner to intermediate carver, attendees started with plain basswood boards and carved in to uncover the details of the owl hidden inside. In addition to carving, Arland worked with attendees to keep their tools sharp, repairing a few knives that needed some TLC.
The instructor was Arland Zeittler. Arland Is the vice-president of the Cherry Ridge Carvers, a hunter and an avid fisherman. He owns his own auto body repair shop. Somehow with all of his other passions he finds time to carve. Arland has introduced hundreds and hundreds of Boy Scouts to the world of carving by holding several hands on workshops every year. He was a great instructor and has a very calm approach. He emphasizes the importance of understanding grain direction.
