Woodworkers of Central New York

November 2020 Show & Tells

During November online meetings, members displayed a variety of projects in the Show & Tell portion of the meetings.  Below are pieces shown during the meetings!

Jim Yonkers completed several different projects.  First is the Patriotic Lawn Weather Vane that Jim made from a piece of
42 x 30 Baltic birch, a dowel,  and 2x4. He added a spinning propeller or 1/8” plywood with a lathe turned hub.  Jim did a great job of painting this weather vane!
Jim turned 6 Juniper (aka southern cedar) bud vases of approximately 6" to 8" tall.  These are two of the 6 with all 6 provided as gifts.  They are finished with a linseed oil and turpentine before a coat of Johnson Paste Wax after drying.
Jim's antique pepper mills are also of juniper and he turned those based on Rod Castle's October 7th Demo.
The FOGwood birdhouse was created while Jim was in Georgia visiting family.  It hangs in a pear tree down there.
Finally, Jim was gifted the beautiful hickory cane by a fellow woodworker from Georgia.  The tops and parts are from the Treeline catalog.

Jim added to his Show & Tell presentation for the Turning SIG meeting.  Jim turned the cherry bowl and added two rings to accent the rim.  The inner ring is green malachite while the outer ring is mother-of-pearl.  For both he used CA glue as the binder and finished the bowl with poly.  The second piece is a pecan bowl he completed previously, adding a poly finish to it also.

Barbara Raymond-LaPrease completed this cherry nativity scene as a birthday gift for her sister.  All pieces are 1/2" thick.  The manger is 5 1/4" tall, the people are about 3" tall.  She embellished the pieces with her woodburner.  A crystal was added to the angel's star.  The finish is Danish oil.

Rod Castle continues to turn peppermills to fill his Etsy store.  The peppermill left is of live oak from Florida - a heavy dense wood.  Rod added purpleheart to the during glue up along with some thin pieces of veneer.  The second peppermill is of red oak.  Both are finished with Minwax Wipe-On Polyurethane.

Mike Vecellio continues to create a wide variety of pens.  His family of Christmas pens - Papa, Momma, & 3 Babies - utilize his unique way of creating a candy cane look.  They, along with his 7 3/4" Gatsy pen, are included in the case of availables.

An earthen dam failed in 2010 along the Sauquiot Creek when Terry Dote was the mayor of Clayville, NY causing flooding.  As logs were removed from the Creek, Terry recovered one.  Recently, he created this box from part of the log.  He believes it is white cedar.
Terry made an attempt to date the log.  He stopped counting at 300 rings.  The earthen dam was built around 1860 so the log was in there about 150 years.  And if you do the calculations, this tree started growing around 1550!

Dave Grant showed a wonderful variety of projects during the turning meeting Show & Tell session.   The cute gnomes are 3" tall by 1 1/2" wide.  Dave turned them from a variety of woods.  They are finished with friction polish, acrylic paint, and some faux fur that Dave found at JoAnn Fabric.)  Video showing how to turn the gnomes can be found on YouTube, including one by Mike Peace.
The knitting bowl is 3" tall by 4 3/4" wide.  Dave turned it from a piece of mulberry which has an open grain similar to oak and ash.  Dave used a saber saw to cut the hole for the yarn.  It is finished with royal blue alcohol-based dye and then covered with DecoArt silver Metallic Lustre which was subsequently wiped off with mineral spirits so the guilding wax remains in the open grain.  Finally, Dave hit it with several light coats of acrylic spray.  This will be a gift for his granddaughter.
Turners often use what is called FOGwood - Found on Ground Wood.  Every attempt to determine the species is often futile.  But, these pieces of wood often make wonderful projects.  Dave's vase ois one of those.  It measures 7 1/2" tall and at its widest it is 3".  Dave finished it with walnut oil and then buffed it with the Beall buffing system.
The blue pen is made of red oak.  It is finished with blue dye, the DecoArt guilding wax , and a topcoat of CA glue.  The second pen is turned from a corn cob before Dave finished it with CA glue.  Dave notes that while he used a slimline 7mm pen tube for the corn cob pen, he suggests using a fatter tube as they are easier to work with.
The last piece is a bottle opener.  The metal end was captured from  a bottle opener in the Clearance area at Walmart.  Again, Dave used a FOGwood branch for the wood.  Once turned, he finished it with yellow alcohol-based dye and wipe-on poly.

Dave Grant used DecoArt Metallic Lustre as a guilding wax.  This product is available at Hobby Lobby and other craft stores as well as online.  It is a soft paste and can be applied with a small sponge, cloth, or even a small stiff brush.  If it hardens on you, add a few drops of water and let it sit overnight, then stir it with a palette knife or plastic knife.  If needed, do this process again until it is the consistency you desire.
Robert Ward presented another large collection of projects he's completed during the past couple of months.  Robert generally uses 1/2" wood for his projects although he is using thinner wood for the stacked cut.  Robert takes orders.

Robert Love had a problem at the front of his house this fall - a rotted porch.  While not turning or fine woodworking, it still took some serious thinking and skill to replace the porch with a stable, well-built structure.  Now, back to turning!
