Charlie LaPrease created a replacement column requested by the contractor restoring this house in Oswego.  The hemlock log was dimensioned by Mike Stock at Logs to Lumber.  After planing, it was mounted on the lathe with a faceplate once the bed extension was added.
The full story with videos will be posted soon.

Bill Keller recently finished this Shaker style table.  He'd finished the walnut veneered top previously as his first veneering attempt.  So, he made the base using solid walnut for the legs and tails using a pegged mortise and tenon.  The table is 18 inches square and the legs are 27 inches.

Bob Casey is working on jigs to help him with his projects.  He is working on two jigs - a Cutting Board Juice Grove jig based on plans from Kings Fine Woodworking.com and a Bandsaw Circle jig based on plans from Woodsmith.  Top are photos of the jig for cutting groves in a cutting board that should catch the juices from any roast cut on the board.  Bottom are the photos of his circle jig.  His center pin is a bit long as he could not find his side cutters before photographing.

John McCabe not only turns but often produces some beautiful furniture.  The spalted maple he used for this table came from a tree cut down to make way for solar panels on a Cazenovia physician colleague's home.  The table will be a gift for the  friend who provided the wood.  John used shellac and carnuba wax for the finish.

Chad Dawson has been enjoying practicing how to make small hollow form vases from dry and green wood. Not all of his attempts at hollowing have been successful mostly due to cracks in the wood that got worse or developed during hollowing. Mel Taber showed him how to turn hollow forms last year and Jim Kent bartered with him and made the metal parts for some hollowing tools and then Chad turned the handles. One of the tools is so radical in bend that it requires him to use a vice-grip pliers to allow a second hand to assist in keeping it from catching and turning over.

Elaine and Ralph Negrotto work on projects as a team.  Elaine started woodworking just about 10 years ago whereas Ralph has been scrolling for years.  For these photos, Ralph did the cutting and then handed the pieces to Elaine who sanded, shaped, painted and assembled the pictures.

Dave Grant turned a willow chips/ veggie and dip bowl, fitting the dip bowl to a glass insert.  He used walnut oil for a finish.  Using instructions provided by Mike Vecellio from the April newsletter, he also turned a couple of mechanical pencils out of dyed spalted maple and lacewood.

Charlie LaPrease is working on a variety of projects during this 'break', while also handling fire calls as they occur  He's worked on tops for the 2020 NYS Fair (top photo is before turning and of course the bottom is a box of 44 tops).  He's got another 38 tops in a second box, all with color.  In addition to tops, Charlie's been turning a variety of bowls and platters.  These of ash and maple.

Barbara Raymond-LaPrease created this Heart Lantern/Trinket Box using what are called Delica beads.  Delicas measure 1/6mm x 1.5mm.  Each bead is added one at a time to the piece to form the box and lid.  A battery-operated tea light will fit inside and create a beautiful soft light when lite.

Steve Sabella is still busy working but when possible he gets to the shop.  He makes the "Marking Pens" shown above left for teachers, often giving them as gifts.  In 2019, Steve and his wife vacationed in Jamaica and brought back a block of Blue Mahoe.  Recently, he finished the bowl above from the block.

Jim Yonkers is working on a variety of projects.  One is the small (7" tall) pedestal box with pewter hinge shown above.  The material is dark gray spectraply with ebony top insert and the finish is beeswax & mineral oil.  Jim collaborated with his wife Jackie to create the two woodpecker door knockers.  The knockers are carved from pine and each has a unique mounting system.  Jackie painted the woodpeckers.  Jim also created the 10" diameter cherry bowl with a beeswax and mineral oil finish.  The cherry is from a tree in Cato.

Bruce Meissner's Wishing Well Planter.  Built for a co-worker's daughter's wedding as a wedding gift.  Made a similar one for his wedding 20+ years ago.  The well is made from 1x6 white cedar found at Home Depot. The rough side is out for a more rustic feel!  Barrel is sized to fit over a 5 gallon pail so it can be used as a planter later. Rings are 16 segments held together with Gorilla glue & splines.  Overall height is 48".

Terry Dote's version of the Dressing Glass outlined by Bob Stevenson in an article from American Period Furniture (Vol. 17, 2017).   The base is veneered using hide glue.  The mirror unit is walnut.  Each marquetry rose has 25-30 pieces per rose.  There is a hidden box behind the center drawer. The piece was finished with a French polish.  The finial is Terry's first attempt at gilding.

Todd Reilly keeps working but at night and on days off, he is enjoying creating new carvings and other projects.  Recently, he's been working on the late Easter egg shelf sitter above.  It is about 4" tall and 2" wide.  He will paint it in a traditional dyed egg look and may add bunny ears and wire arms.  Previously, he found two "Immature" eggs, two of his early projects.  The "Pokey Snail" is colorfully painted with a license plate that reinforces his desire to go fast (see his license plate.  Todd is not limited to carving, he scrolled some small characters for family projects as well as created the functional toy Ferris Wheel for his sister's kids.  The Ferris Wheel is made with popsicle sticks and some scrap wood pieces.  Turning the crank will spin the wheel.  The baskets are hand made from scrap.  He got a box of maple log rings to use on future projects.
Todd's work on his high relief project is shown on the gallery page for the project, here.

Bruce Meissner was asked by a friend to create a donation box for the Helping Hounds Dog Rescue Center.  This box is roughly a 6 inch cube with a bottom that is screwed in place so donations can be removed.  This facility provides a compassionate approach to dog rescue by matching homeless dogs from overcrowded shelter systems with loving homes.   They are located in North Syracuse.  More details can be found on their website, here.

Mitch Wilson loves to build projects using only hand tools.  During the 2020 Farm Show, he started working on a cat dish holder.  Upon returning home, he worked to complete the project.  He intended to build with just hand tools but did employ a few power tools.  Two of the four corners were cut with the coping saw, but the other two and all the concave curves were cut on the bandsaw.
He also used a 2" Forstner bit in the drill press to create the center dish inset.  While the heavy duty knot and weird figure pushed Mitch to use the power tools, Jack's health (the cat) pushed him to move up his original timetable so Jack could use it.  Shortly after the Farm Show, Jack started getting sick with the potential prognosis mediastinal lymphoma.  While waiting on test results, Jack is enjoying his cat food dish stand.  It is low enough that sometimes he sits down but most of the time he still stands as shown in the photo.
The platform is pine while the legs are cherry.  All the dados and mortises were done at the Farm Show.  The tenons were done at home with a backsaw, fret saw, and chisels just like dovetails are cut.  The two end dish insets were done by hand with chair making tools including a scorp, travisher, gouge, and card scraper.  The final contouring of the edges was done with spokeshaves, rasps, and sandpaper.  The finish is three coats of platina blonde shellac.

Former member Mike Shuron checks in regularly with many of us back here in Central New York.  Mike moved to Kentucky a few years ago and his retirement "job" is building toys.  Even before leaving Syracuse, Mike was building toys and showed his talents in our exhibit during the 2015 & 2016 NYS Fairs, bringing  his grandson Alex with him.  Alex learned the antique scrollsaw and still stops in to our exhibit to visit and practice after working at Villa Pizze Fritte during the Fair.
What does Mike do with all these toys?  In different times, he sells a few at local craft shows.  Mostly, he donates toys to military families at Christmas as well as other various charities in Northern Kentucky throughout the year.
Mike uses southern yellow pine, white pine, walnut, maple and mahogany to build the toys.  The southern yellow pine is all scrap from local builders.
What's he got in the March output which included many more higher end toys than in January?  Small cars (110), panel trucks (4), pickup trucks (9), quarry trucks (5), small buses (2), dozers (6),  articulated front end loaders (5), low boy tractor trailers (3), tractor trailers (2), alphabet block sets (2), and a scraper/earthmover on consignment.
