Woodworkers of Central New York

July 2021 Show & Tells

We had three gatherings in July - two virtual on July 7th and on July 13th, and an in-person Carvers session on July 15th.  The Scrollers did not meet in July.  Below are photos and descriptions of the many projects discussed during the Show & Tell portion of the meetings.

Ed Siegel presented the hollow form that he used for his June 8th demonstration on piercing.  He completed the piercing, removing most of the upper form to reveal the deer, trees, and outline of the mountains.  He then colorized it.
Ed also showed a veneer inlay cut using the Cricuit which he then inserted into the bottom of a walnut bowl.

Doug North showed a charcuterie board he created as a gift for a retiring member of the Coro Federal Credit Union.  The long-term employee was considered to be the Heart & Soul of the Credit Union, hence the engraving on the bottom.  The wood is ambrosia maple.
Bruce Meissner turned these two pen & pencil sets for co-workers who are retiring.  The wood is purpleheart and he used a CA finish called GluBoost.  The boxes are prefinished maple from Penn State on which Bruce laser engraved their names.

Arlene Schlueter carved and embellished this adorable and precious mouse holding a flower.  When this photo was taken, Arlene had used a set of feet  with which she wasn't happy.  She has since created the feet so they are more substantial.

Charlie LaPrease showed this 18" maple platter which he finished with Osmo.
Bill Keller needed to create a smaller outfeed table for his table saw.  Previous versions were too big and often got in the way when he was working on projects.  He used a design and article by Steve Fikar in Issue 286 of Fine Woodworking as his guide, modifying it as needed to fit his needs.  As the photos show, the table folds down to take up a smaller footprint.  When needed, he flips it up to increase the length as needed for outfeed.

Bob Casey like Shaker paraphernalia and spends one weekend a month during the summer at the Hancock Shaker Museum.  When making Shaker boxes, you place molds inside the bands to form them and then allow them to dry.  Rather than solid molds, he is creating split molds like one found at the Museum (left photo).  Bob showed four of the molds he's created (for box sizes 0-3) which still need hinges.
John McCabe has a variety of scrap woods in his shop.  Recently, he assembled a group of those woods - maple, walnut, cherry, mango, mahogany, koa, & monkey pod - and turned handles for these ice cream paddles which a friend sells in her Cazenovia store.  The paddle kits are from Penn State.

Robert Love works some pretty long hours but occasionally gets a chance to turn.  During a recent session, he turned this lidded candy dish from a piece of Oregon myrtle burl.  He added a handle of ebony to lift the lid.  The dish is finished with lacquer.

Mike Vecellio makes pens.  He is always looking for new designs and ways to make the pens.  This is one of his that he calls his Patriotic Pen.

Jim Yonkers always presents a unique collection of projects.  This month was no different.  On the left above is a cherry weed pot with a poly finish.  In the center is a maple pot with a poly finish made from a piece of wood that's been in his shop at least 12 years.  He used Spectraply to create the small bud vase on the right and also finished it with poly.  He carved the laddle from pecan.

Jim also showed this photo of a new foal born 7/12/2021 in Georgia.

Todd Reilly's sister asked him to create a Ferris Wheel for her kids to play with.  She expected something flat.  Todd built this 16" unit using popsicle ticks, dowels, and thin basswood.  The kids love it and use the crank to turn it.
Todd is also learning to turn and started the bowl bottom left during the July 10th workshop with help from Robert Love.  He finished it on Sunday and then worked on the live edge bowl bottom right.  He used wood from this parents that was recently cut.

When Ted Kleege has a few moments, he will turn a few items and donate them to the club.  Everything here will be used for the 2022 NYS Fair.  The mice are for the Great Mouse Hunt, a new feature that will award a mouse to lucky participants in the scavenger hunt in the Agricultural Museum.  The tops are some of many that will be sold during the Fair.
