Gluing projects together can be tricky. The species of wood can make a difference. Whether you have a finish on the wood can make a difference. How well it is sanded can make a difference. Bob Behnke of Titebond joins us at our September meeting to discuss these and many other topics with those in attendance! Join us to learn!
Available as a hybrid session (both in-person and Zoom session), bring Show & Tell items to share with the group. Not able to make it but have projects for Show & Tell? Send an email with photos and a description to [email protected] by 3pm on Sept 4th to be included in the slide show.
We welcome guests at all demonstrations for no fee. We ask that you sign-in at the front desk and hope you will mingle with others in the room. We do still offer Zoom participation to members and guests if needed. Zoom information must be requested at least one day ahead of the meeting by using the contact form below.

Members of the club will be demonstrating at the Syracuse Maker Faire on Saturday, May 4th. The event runs from 10am to 4pm and will be held in the Horticulture Building at the New York State Fairgrounds. This is the 3rd year for Maker Faire in Syracuse with this year's event a bit later and in another location. However, as most know, the Fairgrounds offers large areas for parking. Our booth will have a collection of turners, scrollers and carvers showcasing their skills. An area of "touchable toys" will be there for kids of all ages to enjoy and many finished projects will be on display for people to learn about from the artisans. Also, our multi-camera video system will be displaying demonstrations on the screen so everyone can see what the artists are creating. Come join us for this fun day!
Members of the club will gather in the Witter Agricultural Museum during the New York State Farm Show to demonstrate their craft. Unlike our demos during the Fair, we will have electrified equipment in the Museum - a couple of lathes, a couple of scrollsaws, the carvers with their tools, and our hand-craftsmen on the workbenches. This is a great time to visit the Museum. Entry to the Museum is free (there is a fee to attend the full farm show) and parking is nearby. Want to join? This is a perfect time to do so!

All members and their family are invited to attend the club-wide annual holiday party which will be held on Sunday, December 3rd from 1pm to 4pm in the Community Room at Station 1. The event is a pot-luck event with the club providing a meat dish along with punch, water, and coffee. We ask that attendees bring the sides - potato, vegetable, salads, etc., desert, or appetizers. We will sit down to eat about 2pm after holding a very short annual meeting for the corporation. This is a fun event and we encourage you to bring some recent projects for the display tables. The room should be decorated for the holidays so it should be festive! Plan to attend to share an afternoon with your fellow woodworkers! We do ask that you send a note to [email protected] indicating your plan to attend and what kind of dish you will be bringing.

NOTE: There are several different dovetail jigs. Dennan will show the one he uses but if you have a different model, plan to read the instructions for specific requirements of yours.
After the demonstration, we will hold our usual Show & Tell session of regular projects. The event will start promptly at 6:30pm. A Zoom link will be sent to members. Show & Tell will be both in-person and by photo. Share your projects by sending photos and a description via email to [email protected] prior to 3pm on October 4th. The club sells a variety of mostly wooden items donated by its members with the proceeds going to local children's charities. Items include many different scrolled, carved, and turned ornaments, bowls, vases, kitchenware, wizard wands, bottle stoppers, etc. Again this year, we will have a large space during the annual Harvest Festival held at Beaver Lake Nature Center just outside of Baldwinsville. We should be near the horse ride area. In addition to the crafts booth, our Carvers will be demonstrating down by the Nature Center and holding a raffle for a walking stick. This is a great opportunity to not only purchase some great crafts but also support local children's charities.

Intarsia is the art of creating a picture by cutting, shaping, and assembling wood of different species. The concept dates back to the 1500's but was reborn in the 1980's when Judy Gale Roberts brought this art form back into the public's eye. The group explored segmentation in October 2022 which is a natural forerunner to intarsia. Sherry Kelsey will walk the group through the basics of intarsia at this session.
The demonstration will start at 6:30pm. For a number of reasons, this session will be held in-person at the Eight Acres Event Center (the club workshop space) but also available to our members via Zoom. The Zoom link and shop address will be sent to all members prior to the event. If you are planning to attend in person, please send a note to [email protected] so we can plan accordingly as there is only so much room in the heated shop space.
Also, don't forget your Show & Tell items to share with other members. If you will be attending via Zoom, OR you can't make it but want to share your projects with others, please send photos and a description via email to [email protected] prior to 3pm on February 15th. Your project will be added to the slides.

Ornamental turning generally involves using a Rose Engine lathe to create very decorative designs on a piece of wood. There is a new museum - the Plumier Foundation - dedicated to ornamental turning and the rose engine lathes in Port Chester, NY, east of New York City. Our member, Jeffrey Cheramie, is working with them to develop a set of video programs for the museum and its website.
During this session, Jeffrey will explore the very interesting history of the ornamental turning and how it came to be with rising up through the ranks of Kings and Queen starting back in the 16th century through the modern times. There will be pictures of items that can be turned on the ornamental lathes, pictures of the lathes, and a tour of the Plumier Foundation. You will see one of the most expensive lathes ever purchased on auction, and even some items made out if ivory. There is a connection between Ornamental Turning and NYS and Jeffrey will talk about it. So if you are interested in learning a bit about ornamental turning and the Plumier Foundation, then stop by for the presentation on July 6.
Unfortunately, this will not be a “how to” presentation, but if the membership would like there can be a separate how to presentation later in the year at some other time.
Jeffrey will present this demo remotely from the Museum via Zoom. This will allow you to enjoy the demo from your home with your favorite adult beverage or snack. The Zoom link will be sent to members a couple days before the event. If you want to attend and are not a member, please send a request to [email protected].
At the end of the demo, we will hold a virtual Show & Tell session. So send photos of your projects via email to [email protected] prior to 3pm on Wednesday, July 6th (earlier if possible). We'll add them to the PowerPoint slides so everyone else can see them.

One of the missions of the Woodworkers of Central New York is to contribute to the community in which we live, practice our craft, and enjoy. Children are the future for all of us and providing resources that can support children, especially those that are sick, is one small way members of the Woodworkers of Central New York can give back.
In order to fulfill that goal, members donate completed projects - ornaments, vases, bottle stoppers, ice cream scoops, nativity scenes, etc. - that are then sold a just a few craft shows regionally. The net profits are then distributed to a variety of local children's charities to help further their mission and offset costs.
The club will be selling at this show for the first time in 2022. We hope you will join us. Our next sale is not until September 10-11 during the Golden Harvest Festival at Beaver Lake Nature Center.
